Memorial Day: Service Beyond the Uniform

Memorial Day: Service Beyond the Uniform

By William “David” Snyder, CEO, Evergreen Private Care | USMC Veteran

Memorial Day carries a special meaning for many Americans, but for those who have served, and for families who have sacrificed, it holds an even deeper significance. It is a time to pause and remember those who gave their lives in service to our country, honoring not only their sacrifice but the freedoms and opportunities their service helped preserve.

As a Marine Corps Veteran and as the leader of a veteran-owned agency, that meaning is never lost on me. It is also one of the reasons the work we do at Evergreen Private Care is so deeply personal. Serving Veterans and their families is not simply a service line for us, it is part of our mission and our responsibility.

We are honored each day to collaborate with the VA Community Care Network (VACCN), helping Veterans receive care where many prefer it most: at home, surrounded by family, dignity, and familiarity. We have been blessed to walk alongside Veterans from all branches and eras of service, supporting not only their needs, but also the loved ones who often stand beside them as caregivers.

When people think about home care for Veterans, they often think only of companion care or assistance with activities of daily living. Those services are incredibly important, but they represent only part of the picture.

Through our team of caregivers and nurses, we can support Veterans and families across a broader continuum of care, including:

  • Companion care and homemaker services
  • Personal care and CNA support
  • Skilled nursing services
  • Medication management and oversight
  • Chronic condition support and monitoring
  • Transitional and post-hospital care
  • Transportation services (private-pay only)
  • Respite services supporting Veteran caregivers and families

Respite, in particular, is an area that deserves greater attention. Many Veterans are cared for every day by spouses and loved ones who quietly carry the responsibility of caregiving. These caregivers give so much of themselves and often need support as well. Providing moments of relief, rest, and reassurance is one of the ways we can continue serving the entire family.

As we continue to expand our nursing services, we see an opportunity to provide even greater support to Veterans living with complex medical needs, helping them remain safely at home while maintaining independence and quality of life.

This work would not be possible without our partners throughout the VA system. I also want to recognize the social workers, care coordinators, nurses, physicians, and VA staff who work tirelessly every day to connect Veterans with resources, coordinate authorizations, and advocate for those they serve. Much of their work happens quietly behind the scenes, but the impact is felt in homes and communities every day.

This Memorial Day, we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice. We honor their legacy not only with words, but through service.

For all of us at Evergreen, continuing to care for Veterans and their families is one small way we strive to carry that legacy forward.

Semper Fidelis.
