LIVING OUR C.A.R.E. VALUES: RESPECT MEANS SHOWING UP

Why punctuality, communication, and calling out appropriately matter in home care

At Evergreen, Respect is one of our core C.A.R.E. values. We often think of respect as kindness, professionalism, and how we speak to clients and families. Those things are true, but in home care, respect is also demonstrated through our actions.

  • Respect means arriving on time. Always
  • Respect means communicating clearly. Always.
  • Respect means understanding that our clients are counting on us. Always.

Unlike other workplaces, our clients cannot simply “wait until the next shift starts.” Many depend on us for meals, medications, mobility assistance, safety supervision, companionship, and peace of mind. When we arrive late or unexpectedly miss a shift, it impacts not only the client, but their family, fellow caregivers, schedulers, nurses, and the entire care team.

Arriving on Time is Respect. Being on time means more than clocking in.

It means:

  • Respecting the client’s routine and schedule
  • Supporting continuity of care
  • Respecting the caregiver finishing the prior shift
  • Helping maintain trust with families

When possible, plan ahead:

  • Allow extra time for traffic or weather
  • Review your schedule in advance
  • Leave early enough to arrive ready to provide care

Calling Out: Respect Means Giving Time

We understand that illness, emergencies, and unexpected situations happen. However, how we call out is critically important to operations.

Providing as much notice as possible allows our team time to:

  • Find replacement coverage
  • Avoid gaps in care
  • Prevent another caregiver from unexpectedly extending their shift
  • Support the client and family appropriately
  • Support the other caregivers on the team

Calling out at the last minute may leave a client without care and place additional burden on teammates. Whenever possible, please notify the office as early as you can.

Calling Out Must Happen by Phone — No Exceptions

While Evergreen often uses text messaging for communication, calling out for a shift must always happen by phone.

Stuart Office: 772-291-2290
Ocala Office: 352-722-2273

Text messages, emails, or messages through other staff members are not acceptable methods for calling out.

Why? Because texts can be missed, delayed, or received outside business workflows. A phone call ensures immediate awareness so scheduling can begin working on coverage right away.

Failure to follow this process may result in:

  • Coaching or mentoring
  • Corrective action
  • Reduced scheduling opportunities in the future
  • Doing so continuously, may mean deactivation as an Evergreen caregiver

Respect is a Team Effort

At Evergreen, respect is not only about how we care for clients—it is how we care for one another.

  • Showing up on time respects the client, and each other.
  • Calling out early respects your team.
  • Following process respects everyone involved in delivering care.

Thank you for continuing to live our C.A.R.E. values every day and for the compassion, professionalism, and commitment you bring to those we serve.
