Mr. Hayward’s Story, A Life of Service
At American House, Mr. Hayward is known for his quick wit, his love of fishing, and the steady pride that comes from a life well-lived. A proud U.S. Navy Veteran, he served aboard the USS Skagit, an attack cargo ship for six years beginning in 1951, and during the Korean War era.
As a telegraph operator, he played a critical role in keeping communications alive across the Far East. When his service ended, Mr. Hayward continued to work with the same dedication — this time for the railroad — before finding joy in retirement along Florida’s Gulf Coast, where his favorite pastime has always been chasing redfish.
A Caregiver’s Quick Action
Today, Mr. Hayward receives care through Evergreen Private Care, where he and his caregiver, Briauna, share a bond built on trust and understanding.
In the early days of their work together, that bond deepened in a way neither could have imagined. While testing a new inflatable life vest in the community pool, the vest accidentally inflated incorrectly, flipping Mr. Hayward face down in the water.
Without hesitation, his Briauna sprang into action, righting him immediately and ensuring his safety. Mr. Hayward often says simply, “She saved my life.”
Her calm, decisive response reflects everything Evergreen stands for: Compassion, Acceptance, Respect, and Excellence — our C.A.R.E. Values in action.
Honoring Extraordinary Care
To recognize this remarkable act and the dedication behind it, Mr. Hayward and the Evergreen team recently held a special Evergreen Pinning Ceremony at American House.
Briauna was presented with a Certificate of Honor and an Evergreen Pinecone Pin — a symbol of growth, strength, and enduring care. The pinning ceremony celebrates caregivers who go above and beyond, demonstrating what it means to serve others with heart and integrity.
For Mr. Hayward, it was an opportunity to honor not only his own legacy of service but also the caregiver who now serves him with that same spirit.
A Legacy of Caring
At Evergreen Private Care, we are proud to serve those who have served our nation — and to celebrate the caregivers whose compassion keeps that mission alive every day.
“Caring for Veterans like Mr. Hayward reminds us that service takes many forms — and it never really ends.”
– William “David” Snyder, Evergreen Private Care Owner, CEO and proud USMC Veteran.
