Caring For Loved Ones With Vision Loss: Glaucoma Awareness Month

January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about one of the leading causes of vision loss in older adults. At Evergreen Private Care, we understand that vision changes—whether from glaucoma or other conditions—can significantly affect daily life, independence, and safety. Just as importantly, we know how challenging this can be for families who want to ensure their loved one remains safe and supported at home.

Glaucoma is often called the “silent thief of sight” because it typically develops slowly and without noticeable symptoms until vision loss has already occurred. According to the National Eye Institute, more than 3 million Americans have glaucoma, and that number is expected to grow as the population ages. While there is no cure, early detection and ongoing treatment can slow progression and help preserve remaining vision.

For individuals living with glaucoma or other vision impairments, everyday tasks—medication management, mobility, meal preparation, or navigating familiar spaces—can become more difficult and sometimes unsafe. That’s when thoughtful, trained support can make a meaningful difference.

At Evergreen Private Care, we help clients with vision challenges continue living independently and confidently in their own homes by providing:

  • Medication reminders and support, especially for eye drops and treatment schedules
  • Safe mobility assistance to reduce fall risk and support confidence around the home
  • Environmental awareness, helping keep pathways clear and routines consistent
  • Assistance with daily activities, such as meal preparation, personal care, and transportation
  • Companion care, offering reassurance, engagement, and emotional support

Our caregivers are trained to approach care with patience, respect, and awareness—understanding that vision loss affects not only physical safety, but emotional well-being and independence as well.

If you or a loved one is living with glaucoma or experiencing vision changes and you’re unsure what level of support might be helpful, we encourage you to reach out. A conversation can make all the difference.

Call our office to schedule a consultation and learn more about how Evergreen Private Care can support you or your family member with compassionate, individualized care—so you can focus on living safely, confidently, and independently at home.
